Will Massachusetts suspend its gas tax?
If legislation suspending the Massachusetts gasoline tax becomes law in Massachusetts before Nov 3, 2026, then the market resolves to Yes.
The legislation must suspend the Massachusetts excise tax on gasoline, reducing it to zero, for any period, whether or not it also suspends the tax on diesel or other motor fuels. A suspension of the diesel tax alone, or a reduction of the gasoline tax that does not reach zero, does not qualify. A suspension that depends on a fuel price threshold or other condition qualifies only if that condition is already met when the legislation becomes law. The bill number and legislative vehicle do not matter. A qualifying provision counts whichever bill it is enacted under, including a supplemental budget or other appropriations act, and whether or not it matches the version Governor Healey proposed. Enactment means the legislation becomes Massachusetts law, whether by the Governor's signature, by becoming law without the Governor's signature, or by the Legislature overriding a veto. The suspension does not need to have taken effect before Nov 3, 2026.
